Many people do not understand the importance of history and how the education of it can affect the present along with the future. For example, a twelve year old male who does not take written tests well but can verbally answer questions correctly when asked by the teacher is more likely to fail the class because of his inability to test, even though he actually knows the information. Another student, a fourteen year old female, who is taught in the traditional classroom but is unable to absorb and connect to the overall information, will likely be able to learn the information for the short period of time that it takes to pass the test but not able to retain it for future experiences.

The importance of history is that it repeats itself, so by teaching students in the best possible way, we can prevent the horrible tragedies of the past from repeating. Some strategies a high school teacher might employ in order to encourage students to connect and relate U.S. history with events going in the present include knowing how students learn, the importance of the environment and discipline surrounding the student, and teaching and evaluation methods.
